Today was our first Monday of the school year! I thought it might be fun to give you a glimpse of our day. The first 10 minutes of our first period class focused on sustained silent reading in a book of the student's choice. Then we forged ahead with our math. In my room, we were mastering the Order of Operations. Following math, we were introduced to 3-D printers! Mrs. Wyatt brought in a printer and shared some of the fascinating work which can be accomplished using this technology. You may get to see this intriguing device at open house. The students were totally amazed. :) Then, in literature we reviewed some of the vocabulary words which appear in chapter 1 and read together. The students will finish the last couple of pages on their own for tomorrow.
Our afternoon was full also. To begin, we spent some time practicing our Books of the Bible for Friday. (There are some engaging YouTube videos which teach the Books in song.) Normally, writing would come right after Christian Studies, but today I flipped our subjects. Instead, we jumped into our Astronomy unit. We watched "Indescribable" with Louie Giglio. This DVD uses astronomy to present the incredible power and creativity of our God. It also reinforces the Gospel message. You might want to ask your child to share some of the things we learned. Finally, we reviewed our 4-square paragraph planning sheets and added transition words to move from sentence to sentence. The students worked so well that we had 15 minutes left at the end of the day for study hall! And that was our day in 6th grade.
In 7th grade science, we continued our study of matter and molecules. The American Chemical Society has an excellent Middle School Science Curriculum which we are using to guide our studies. Our lab last Friday dealt with water molecules and the way they are attracted to each other. You might want to ask your student about today's video of a water balloon being popped. We were definitely surprised by the slow motion video!
