Woohoo! It's only Thursday and already we have 100% on our class memory work. Bring on that extra 10 minute recess in the morning! But wait, that's not all. Since everyone said the verse early, the students all received an extra point. :)
Today we spent some time working on our paragraph revisions and several students turned in final versions. Most of the class members will turn in their finals tomorrow, although the "drop dead date" isn't until 8:30 AM Tuesday morning. In addition, we began our read aloud of The Biography of Nate Saint and reviewed the literary element of setting. We have explanded the definition of setting to include not only time and place, but also environment. It's a new challenge, but from our class discussion, I think they are ready for it. Also, we discussed our need to read 20 minutes per day for five days each week--or an equivalent amount of time. The students will enter their reading minutes in their planner and sign their initials. No parent initials will be required.
Because we've been spending part of our science time working on routines and study skills, I decided to take the whole period to do a science challenge today. The sixth graders had to create the tallest freestanding tower they could build using only two sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" printer paper and cellophane tape. The kids did a good job of designing, testing, analyzing, redesigning and retesting. We have some future design engineers in this class. :)
I'm noticing that some of the students are not having their daily planner pages initialed by a parent. As a result, I have to sign their behavior sheet. I'm trying to give them some extra reminders and you might want to check with them also. Thanks.
Can't wait for tomorrow!
